Physio-led exercise classes – individualized recovery strategies

Each person and each recovery plan is different. People have unique combinations of injury-related movement deficits, goals for recovery and preferences as to how they want to exercise. So a ‘one-size-fits-all’ exercise approach is likely to be less effective than an individualized program. But the one thing that is generally true for most of us, regardless of our shape, weight, age or previous experience, is that exercise is needed for good recovery.

Superspine Forest Hill provides Physio-led group exercise classes throughout the week, including Saturdays. These are available to any patient attending Superspine after booking an initial class assessment with one of our Masters’ level Physiotherapists who lead each class. The initial assessment allows us to construct an individualised exercise program to meet your specific functional goals – tell us what you need to be able to do and we can work out an exercise strategy that matches your particular injury and key issues. This may include evidence-based exercises for common problems like low back pain, neck pain, knee osteoarthritis and tendon pathologies. We try to avoid giving generalised exercise programs, as your strength and functional needs are not defined by a diagnosis, especially if you have multiple areas to address. Even when pain is present, exercise is a vital part of the recovery program, as pain often discourages activity and leads to an overall loss of strength and mobility.

You might start with a few simple exercises to do at home when you first see one of our Physiotherapists for treatment, but this will need to progress to a more strategic program, depending on the severity of the injury and how long you have had your symptoms for. The evidence suggests that two or three exercise sessions per week is ideal, although you might choose to perform one or two sessions per week through a supervised exercise class as an ‘anchor’ combined with a self-managed home or independent gym program. We also offer independent use of the Superspine gym once you are confident with your individual program. The Physiotherapist leading your class will know who you are and what your specific needs are to advise you of your best options.

Frequently asked questions

How many people are in a class?

There is a maximum of 6 participants in a class, spread out over two training areas.

Can I join a class straight away or do I need to see a Physio first?

You need to attend a one-on-one initial class assessment session, ideally with the clinician who is running your chosen class. This allows the clinician to work out your needs, teach you how to do the exercises and use the equipment. Some people prefer one-on-one training for several sessions and this can be provided. However, most people feel comfortable to join a class after the initial one-on one session.

How much do classes cost?   (Updated July 2025)

Each class costs $55 when booked casually. If you purchase a 10 class package this will include a 10% discount, and reserves your choice of time and clinician for the whole 10-week block. However, there are no refunds for non-attendance unless medically certified. Classes run continuously throughout the year in five 10-week blocks, with a short 2-week break over the Christmas and new year holidays. You can start your classes at any time, but 10-class packs must be completed within each 10-week block.

How many classes do I need to do?
We generally advise a 3-6 month training program, although your clinician will be more specific with timeframes for your individual goals. Exercise works best when implemented around two to three times per week. The most common approach is to do one supervised exercise class per week and two self-managed, unsupervised exercise sessions either at home, in the Superspine gym or at a local gym. Some people choose to do two classes per week, which also attracts a second class pack discount when purchased in advance.

Can I claim on my health insurance?

Yes you can. All of our class clinicians are Physiotherapists (insurance item code 560). They will measure your progress, monitor change, alter the program and record results for each session, which is consistent with health insurer guidelines for exercise classes.

When do I see changes taking place?

Progress of strength and reduction of symptoms are typically noticeable between the 6th to 8th week of consistent training.

What do I need to wear or bring?
Please wear loose comfortable clothing with runners and bring a towel.  All equipment, hand sanitizer, drinking water and sanitizing wipes are provided. Socks should be worn for hygiene reasons on all Pilates equipment.

How do I use the class block?
Generally, classes are done either once or twice a week. Discuss your best option with either your treating clinician, or during your initial class assessment. It is important that you book your classes prior to attending.
